A Chinese poem written in Han dynasty(about 2000 years ago)describes the qualities that a teenage lady should possess: weaving in thirteen, sewing in fourteen, playing Konghou in fifteen, reading in sixteen.

Konghou, an ancient plucked stringed instrument, looking like harp, was said to be introduced and adapted in the hinterland of China via Xinjiang through ancient Silk Road. Up to now in China, we can also see many ancient poems and murals depicting the unique instrument.

Aydina Yasin a teenage girl, living Qiemo County of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is learning how to play Konghou.

Aydina’s hometown Qiemo County, is known as the hometown of the instrument as it is where one of the oldest Konghou relics in China was discovered.

In the summer of 2016, for the first time Aydina heard the sound of Konghou in a concert hold in Qiemo. Actually, in 2015, the county had invited a Beijing-based renowned Konghou performer to promote the instrument in the county. Later, the local government also developed a program, to nurture Konghou teachers and students to promote the instrument.

Aydina’s mother, a music teacher read her daughter’s admiration of the Konghou performers and decided to support her daughter if there is any opportunity.

In 2017, Aydina had her chance, the Konghou nurturing program was going to recruit students again. Aydina joined the program. With her mother’s support, Aydina had her own Konghou instrument, two months after she had learned to play Konghou, priced at about 40,000 yuan.
