JIEYANG, Guangdong –  Doufu, a puppy affectionately known by supporters as “The Little Fortune,” reportedly survived a devastating animal abuse incident in Jieyang that resulted in the deaths of his mother, Wangwang, and several of her puppies.

The case sparked widespread outrage after videos and online accounts alleged that Wangwang, a stray mother dog, and her young puppies were subjected to severe abuse by a group of children. Reports stated that the animals were beaten with sticks and other objects, while Wangwang was later set alight. The incident drew attention from animal welfare advocates in China and overseas, leading to memorial campaigns and renewed calls for stronger legal protection against animal cruelty.

Wangwang was remembered by local residents as a gentle and devoted mother. She had previously given birth to six puppies, five of whom were reportedly adopted. She later cared for another litter in a pit near the community, where she was often seen sheltering and protecting her young.

Doufu is believed to have been one of the puppies caught in the incident. According to online footage and accounts shared by netizens, a female voice could allegedly be heard asking that one remaining puppy be spared and saying she would take him away. Supporters believe that puppy was Doufu.

After surviving the attack, Doufu reportedly passed through the care of several people before reaching his current adopter. The adopter said Doufu arrived at around noon on July 3 and initially required milk formula, careful feeding and close supervision. Before reaching his current home, he had reportedly been given simple foods such as biscuits, bread and porridge.

Images later shared online appeared to show Doufu resting in a kennel with food, bedding and items intended to keep him cool during the summer. His current carer reportedly provides private updates to supporters while limiting public posts to protect Doufu’s safety.

Some online users have raised questions about the identities of the individuals who first handled Doufu and whether they were connected to those involved in the abuse. However, these claims remain unverified.

Another surviving dog, Laifu, Wangwang’s son from an earlier litter, had already been adopted and was reportedly away from the scene when the incident occurred.

For many supporters, Doufu’s survival offers a small measure of hope after the loss of Wangwang and her puppies. Now known as “The Little Fortune,” Doufu has become a symbol of resilience, compassion and the urgent need to protect vulnerable animals from abuse.
